Coast Lifestyles Tips: Homeowners Prepare their Homes for Fall

The leaves are falling, the breeze is brisk and wood smoke filters through the air. Yup, it’s fall. Although summer is definitely my favorite season I can’t help but get a cozy warm feeling when I think of fall. I haul out my thick sweaters, tall leather boots, hats and mitts and squirrel away my flip flop and frilly dresses until next year.

Well, you can do the same thing for your home. Fall is a great time to inspect your home and get it ready for the cooler weather.

firewoodLet’s start outside…

  • Rake leaves and debris from walkways and lawns.
  • Plant spring bulbs, mulch garden beds with said leaves.
  • Clear the gutters of more leaves and debris.
  • Check outdoor lighting and replace burnt out bulbs.
  • Store patio furniture in a covered area.
  • Feed the lawn.
  • Prepare garden tools for storage.
  • Finally, take the snow blower out of storage and give it a pre-season tune up.

Add a touch of whimsy and colour with a seasonal wreath on the front door or a pair of potted mum along the walkway.

  • Clean the fireplace, check the chimney and stock up on firewood.
  • Check windows and doors for drafts. Caulk and seal where necessary.
  • Check smoke detectors and replace batteries.
  • Clean or replace heat registers and air filters.
  • Reverse ceiling fans to draw air up causing warm air to be pushed back down into the room.
  • Change out linens and draperies and replace summer wear with winter wear.
  • Stock the bar with something strong and fragrant that leaves a burning sensation in your throat (think Swiss mountain dog with a rescue keg)

Now, spark the cinnamon scented candles, throw a few rosemary twigs on the fire, sit back and you’re ready to enjoy the season!RescueDog
